Skiing has become significantly more expensive this past winter due to inflation. Since then, costs (e.g. energy costs) have continued to rise. Will there be price increases again this winter?
Blick analyzed daily ticket and season tariffs for 25 popular ski areas in Switzerland. The prices of 11 of them did not change compared to last winter. It increased 5-day ticket prices by 3 to 6 percent. The other six increased season ticket prices by only 1 to 12 percent. 1 ski area has not been decided yet.
Two ski areas have increased both daily and season ticket prices: Flims-Laax-Falera GR and Samnaun GR. Laax did not increase prices last year and is doing the same now. Spokesman Roger Kreienbühl says on behalf of Samnaun: “High inflation and high energy prices in Austria have led to the adjustment of ski pass prices at the international Silvretta Ski Arena Samnaun/Ischgl.”
In some cases it is cheaper. The widely used dynamic pricing system creates a price range. Basically, the earlier you book, the cheaper the prices.
Cheaper tariffs are possible in the Adelboden-Lenk BE ski area, which has switched to a dynamic pricing system this winter, compared to last year. But there are also more expensive ones.
In the Unterwasser/Chäserrugg SG ski area you can buy a daily ticket for around 50 francs for most days during the season. This is around 20 percent cheaper than previous prices. “We recognize that guests need to adapt their booking behavior,” marketing manager Alex Singenberger explains to Blick. At least the guest has a chance to get attractive prices.
However, some winter sports enthusiasts are hesitant to make early reservations. For example, due to the lack of certainty regarding season opening dates in many ski areas or because many handle their agendas flexibly. “There are a variety of insurance solutions that will reduce your own risk when booking early,” says Singenberger.
Even if there is no price shock like last year, the price level remains high and in some cases even increases. Ski areas with rising prices consistently argue the same thing: rising labor costs, purchase prices and operating costs, especially energy prices. Gstaad BE also introduces new software for price calculation.
At the ski areas listed, adults need to spend an average of 50 to 90 francs for a day ticket. For season or annual tickets the range is 600 to 1,300 francs. There are sometimes lower prices for locals.
Ski seasons usually start in November or December. It can also be done earlier “if snow conditions are good”, but then only on weekends.
The record summer was also felt at higher altitudes. The Engelberg-Titlis ski area is scheduled to open on October 7, 2023. Due to a lack of natural snow this was initially postponed to October 21, but the start date is now November 4.
