They are called Zak, Yuh or Neon. Neobanks, also known as smartphone banks, are the new competition to traditional banks. There are now seven different Swiss smartphone banks, usually linked to one traditional bank. It is very difficult to keep track of events.
Six out of seven smartphone banks offer a completely free account. At Neon you have to pay a one-time fee of 10 francs for a debit card. Depending on the provider, it costs money to transfer money in other currencies. The standard account cost is only covered after the first six months with Alpian: 0.75 percent of the investment fiduciary fee is paid every three months.
CSX pays the best interest rate: 1.5 percent interest on assets worth up to 250,000 francs – but only with the most expensive offering, “CSX Platinum”. Alpian, Radicant, Yuh and Zak offer 1.0 percent interest only up to a certain amount of assets, depending on the amount. Neon offers interest rates of up to 0.9 percent. Yapeal is not allowed to pay interest because it does not have a full banking licence.
You can also deposit your money with Alpian, CSX, Neon and Yuh. There are always costs associated with this. In this case, the bank usually deals with the investments. You can also deposit money to the sustainability bank Radicant: part of the cash deposit is then invested in green bonds to support global sustainability projects.
CSX, Yapeal, Yuh and Zak offer retirement solutions in the form of a third pillar; The offer always looks a little different. These charges: A flat fee of 0.5 percent must be paid for the third column in Yuh. At Zak you can choose whether the money will be held in an account or invested in sustainable securities.
Only Radicant and Yuh have their own Twint implementation. CSX clients can use the Credit Suisse Twint app. Alpian and Zak recommend the Twint prepaid app, which requires adding credit first. Neon and Yapeal used the UBS Twint application for a long time. But this doesn’t work anymore. So here too users need to switch to Twint Prepaid.
Alpian is best suited for payments abroad. This is a multi-currency account consisting of Swiss francs, euros, British pounds and US dollars. Foreign exchange services and international payments are also included. With other providers, payments in a currency other than Swiss francs incur extra fees.
If sustainability is particularly important to you, you should take a closer look at Radicant or Neon’s “Green” offering. With Zak, “Zak Instant” money can be sent and received directly; Group expenses can also be managed this way. “Neon metal” comes with an insurance package that includes mobile phone and ticket insurance. Yapeal is the only neobank that offers corporate accounts.
