With Rainer E. Gut, Switzerland is losing one of its most prominent and influential business leaders. He died at the age of 91, NZZ reported. He was chairman of the board of directors of Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and later of Credit Suisse and served as chairman of the board for a long time. Gut was its honorary chairman from 2000 until his resignation at the last general meeting of Credit Suisse in 2023.
He was President of Nestlé from 2000 to 2005. Gut held many managerial positions in international companies. This is the case with Alusuisse, Bayer, Swiss Re and Swissair. Also at Ciba Geigy/Novartis, Elektrowatt and Sulzer.
Gout has also left its mark on sports. From 1999 to 2003 he was patron of Grasshopper Club Zurich together with Fritz Gerber. Under his tutelage GC won its last championship title. He let victory cost him dearly. It is said that the duo invested between 80 and 100 million. After Gut’s departure in 2003, GC took a turn for the worse.
