Store chain in Bern affected: Oven deaths continue

There is no end to the death of baking. It now reaches the location of the Flury furnace in Koppigen BE.

Flury is actually one of the biggest players in the bakery industry: The company currently operates with seven branches. 90 people work in the bakery chain.

But now the bakery’s demise affects even this apparent top dog: the location on Koppigen BE in Emmental will be closed at the end of the month. This was first reported by the online portal Bärn Today. Both the bakery and the adjacent restaurant will be affected by the closure.

The branch had been red for years, owner Robert Morgenthaler noted in an affidavit. The restaurant in Koppigen had to be cross-supported by other branches. In 2021, Flury bakery reinvested in the location and made structural changes, but without success. More investments would be required in 2024.

Post-Corona, energy prices and wage costs

A total of 10 employees were affected by the closure. Connection solutions were found for seven of them. Flury bakery gave notice to three other employees at the end of October. It is currently unclear what will happen to the land and building. Fury Bakery would like to work with the community to consider turning it into a residential or community space.

Bakery Flury confirmed that other locations in Biberist SO, Koppigen Aspi BE, Luterbach SO, Langendorf SO, Subingen SO and Utzenstorf BE will be preserved. “Despite post-Corona, rising wage costs due to the shortage of skilled workers and significant additional expenses, especially for energy and raw materials,” writes the company’s owner, Robert Morgenthaler, in a statement. A new branch will soon open in Burgdorf BE, which Flury took over from the bankrupt Chrigubeck.

Bread rolls from the supermarket

The death of ovens leads to more and more victims across the country. This is because margins in the industry are low. Baked goods trading is an energy-intensive business, bakeries operate at all hours of the day, and with increasing energy prices, this costs bakers dearly.

Advert

Bakeries can only pass on costs to their customers to a limited extent. Due to rising prices, many people prefer to buy their rolls and croissants from the supermarket rather than a traditional bakery. If the baker opens the door, customers will stay away.

In addition, like many other sectors, bakeries also suffer from personnel shortages. Higher wages must be paid to fill vacancies, further squeezing margins. (sfa/lui)
