Insiders informed Blick on Saturday that Liebherr millionaire heiress Katharina Liebherr, 45, had married the head of the Zurich Dior branch. The festival took place at the luxury hotel Dolder Grand in Zurich, at an event attended by the Swiss business elite.

Who is behind the Liebherr name and how did the family become worth billions?

Hans Liebherr (1915–1993) took over his parents’ construction business in 1938. Shortly after World War II he developed a mobile tower crane intended to make working on construction sites much easier. It became the first hit in the world and laid the foundation of the Liebherr company as we know it today. In 1949 he officially founded the Liebherr company in Kirchdorf an der Iller, Baden-Württemberg. Liebherr now operates in dozens of construction and industrial sectors. For example, in mechanical and vehicle construction, household appliances and civil engineering.

In 1993, the company’s founder, Hans Liebherr, died. At the time, the company employed more than 9,000 people in Germany alone and generated sales of 2.5 billion euros. Since the 1980s, Markus Liebherr’s children Markus (†62), Willi (76), Hubert (73) and Isolde (74) have held equal shares in the holding company. The fifth of the sibling group is Hans Liebherr Jr. (77). He is the owner of Calvaro, a company that trades in medical devices, hygiene products and cleaning products.

Willi Liebherr and his sister Isolde Liebherr still sit on the company’s board of directors today. According to Forbes, the two are worth $7.1 billion. In 1988 Hubert Liebherr left the company. When he left, he gave up 100 million euros of company shares. By the 1990s the company employed 18,000 people worldwide. According to reports, the company currently employs more than 35,000 people worldwide.

Liebherr is represented in 18 countries. As a joint stock company, the company is one of the largest in the world. The company is headquartered in the French-speaking town of Bulle FR. The company has 16 locations, but mainly in Germany. Liebherr also owns six hotels in Ireland, Austria and Germany. Since 2013, 102 employees have been working at the Liebherr-Logistics subsidiary. The new company is headquartered in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Figures from company reports show that the Liebherr empire is growing. Today Liebherr claims annual sales of 12 billion euros. Almost five times what it was 30 years ago.

Katharina Liebherr’s (45) father is the late Markus Liebherr. When she died in 2010, she inherited tens of millions of shares. His assets are currently estimated at 450 to 500 million francs, as the entrepreneur has invested a large part of his inheritance. Among other things, she is the owner of the English football club Southampton.

Ralph Krueger (64), former Swiss national ice hockey coach and family friend, served as chairman of the club’s board of directors from 2014 to 2019. In response to Blick’s question, Ralph Krueger did not want to go into further detail about the relationship with the Liebherr family: he said he wanted to “respect their privacy.”

Katharina Liebherr, meanwhile, lives in central Switzerland and recently owned an apartment in Zurich, according to Blick research. She lives there with her husband Mustafa Çaban.
