Be careful when packing: This type of clothing can cause serious problems in the Caribbean

Getting disembarked on a Caribbean cruise can result in jail just because you’re wearing the wrong clothes. Basically, a small amount of luggage is enough for a cruise on the Caribbean Sea: swimsuits and slippers, a few T-shirts and shorts, a pair of light trousers and something stylish for a gala dinner on board.

There is one thing you should never pack in your travel bag or rolling suitcase: a tank top in military camouflage colors or trousers with a camouflage pattern. In some Caribbean countries, civilians are prohibited from wearing or even importing military camouflage clothing. This is what the German travel portal Travelbook writes.

Authorities warn

The German Foreign Office clearly points out the ban in its travel advice for Barbados: “It is forbidden to wear clothing in public in the color or pattern of military camouflage; this is reserved for the military only.” The same goes for Trinidad and Tobago. Or St. Kitts Island.

The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) also warns in its travel advice for Barbados: “Wearing military clothing is a criminal offence.”

Wearing camouflage clothing in Antigua can be really expensive or very uncomfortable: you risk a fine equivalent to 1,800 francs or imprisonment for up to a year.

Clueless organizers

But even tour operators or cruise lines rarely have delicate clothing on their radar. Only a spokesperson from TUI Cruises responded to Travelbook’s question: “Our guests are informed in advance in writing about the ban on camouflage when traveling to relevant regions, and we reiterate this on the ship before each shore exit.”

So if you don’t want to have problems in the Caribbean or other countries like Saudi Arabia, you should leave the military patch pattern in your closet at home.
