Most donors don’t even notice: Swiss banks collect money when donations are made via Twint

Twint is increasingly being used for donations.

The earthquake in Morocco and the terrible floods in Libya caused thousands of deaths. Natural disaster images were shocking. Many want to help. As fast as possible. Take your mobile phone and donate money. This is practical.

Switzerland’s leading charities offer the opportunity to donate via mobile phone everywhere. Also with Twint. “Twint has become the most important means of payment for online donations,” Raymond Ruch, communications officer of the Swiss Red Cross, tells the FM1-Today portal. A third of online donations come through Twint.

Twint cuts some fees

Twint is also becoming increasingly important for the Swiss Solidarity Organisation. “Just over half of the donations made through our website are made through Twint,” says spokesman Fabian Emmenegger. Twint is especially popular during and after acute events. It is no surprise that Swiss Solidarity is now calling for donations via Twint.

What few people know: Twint collects a portion of donations as a fee. “A small contribution will be deducted by Twint for the transfer,” the payment service provider’s small print reads. The same goes for Raisenow, the fundraising platform that provides the donation environment.

Specifically: Everyone who supports victims of natural disasters with 50 francs also donates a share to Twint and Raisenow. And also to the Swiss banks behind Twint. According to the Swiss Red Cross, wages are “less than two percent”.

Pay the fees out of your own pocket

“We hear repeatedly from different charities that connecting with Twint is one of the most cost-effective channels for fundraising, given the overall costs of fundraising campaigns,” a Twint spokesperson tells FM1-Today.

Swiss Solidarity explains the fees on its website. And it offers donors the opportunity to pay for it out of their own pockets. “Yes, I pay the 2 percent processing fee and thus ensure that 100 percent of my donation goes to Swiss Solidarity,” he says. This option is not yet available at the Swiss Red Cross. But he says it is being controlled. (pbe)
