Moderna had the vaccine produced in the Upper Valais for certain markets, including Switzerland, during the corona pandemic. It was announced on Tuesday that production here will be stopped in the third quarter of 2023. “As soon as our messenger RNA portfolio becomes more concrete, we will discuss possible collaborations,” Stéphane Bancel, Moderna’s chief executive, said in an interview published Monday in “Le Temps” magazine.
He said Moderna is “resizing its industrial footprint and supply base to accelerate gross margin growth toward its long-term goal of 75 to 80 percent.” The president of the US company said that demand for vaccines has fallen by 66 percent.
The company, headquartered in Cambridge near Boston, Massachusetts, plans to meet demand through its Norwood location within the next two years.
Moderna plans to expand capacity at new mRNA production facilities in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia by 2025. The production partnership with Rovi will continue in Spain. “We opened a new competence center in Madrid at the beginning of this year,” Bancel said.
Stating that this center makes it possible to carry out analytical tests for the certification of mRNA vaccine series for markets outside the USA, the official said, “This makes Spain the largest production center covering all steps of the production chain of Moderna vaccines outside the USA.” (pbe/SDA)
