The Federal Council will publish next year’s health insurance premiums in the next few days.

At the end of September, the Federal Council publishes next year’s health insurance premiums. One thing is already clear: it will be very expensive again! As Blick reported in April 2023, premiums could rise again by a whopping 7.5 percent.

The deadline to change health insurance at the beginning of the year is November 30. Until then, you must cancel your old insurance before you can replace your basic insurance. That’s why it’s useful to make a comparison beforehand. Comparison portals on the Internet should help with this. However, not every platform is suitable for every insured. Blick demonstrates how the portals work and what distinguishes individual providers.

How do comparison platforms work?

Year of birth, gender and place of residence – these are the most important data that platforms need. Computers then distribute the relevant bonuses. It’s also possible to match multiple people at once with each provider. This is especially welcome for families.

You can request a free quote directly from a health insurance company on many websites. This means you can get new insurance immediately. Platforms make their money through mediation. A commission is charged from the health insurance company for each accepted offer.

There is some confusion about the price: the different portals all offer essentially the same rewards. In addition to insurance costs, the federal environmental tax is also redistributed through the health insurance company. For 2023, this was 5.10 francs per month. Depending on the premium calculator, this amount may or may not be included.

What independent portals are there?

priminfo.admin.ch

Priminfo is the federal government’s ad-free premium calculator. The platform stands out primarily thanks to two special functions. Thanks to the franchise comparison, the insured can compare different franchises of health insurance companies directly in a table. Priminfo also provides an overview of premium changes over the last six years.

Big drawback of the federal website: You can’t ask for quotes directly, you can only compare premiums.

consumerprotection.ch

Even though the Consumer Protection Foundation’s portal doesn’t offer as broad an overview as the federal government’s, you’ll benefit from the extras. If you keep your annual medical expenses in mind, you can calculate the optimal deductible amount. The website then automatically uses this in the comparison. Ultimately, if you find a suitable match, you can also get insurance. This is a big plus point, unlike Priminfo.

swupp.ch

Another alternative is swupp.ch. The provider is independent, but health insurance companies pay commissions for accepted quotes. However, this has no impact on the customer. A nice addition: You can see at a glance how many people are insured with the relevant insurance company, how long the average refund takes and how efficiently the insurance works (administrative costs per person).

Swupp has one drawback: It is not possible to compare different insurance models at the same time.

What can commercial providers do?

comparison.ch

Besides independent providers, there are also portals that want to fill their own accounts with advertising deals. They prefer to mediate their partners’ insurance policies through contracts with health insurance companies. For example, the well-known online comparison portal Comparis does this. Even if there are cheaper health insurance companies, partners’ offers are displayed at the top of the comparison. After all, the premium calculator clearly shows the sponsorship as an “advertisement.”

This provider also has a minus point. Visitors to the website can only request quotes from cash registers that also work with Comparis.

bonus.ch

Bonus is a little more gimmicky than Comparis and tries to showcase its partners more clearly. The calculator even declares the first two offers as “advertisements”. You will then automatically be in standard view. Now only cash registers that work with the provider are displayed. The bonus only shows all Swiss insurance companies when you actively switch to the overview.

What are the benefits of insurance premium calculators?

Health insurance companies’ own comparison portals, such as Sanitas, only compare and present their own insurance quotes. This can only be useful if you’re happy with your insurance but perhaps want to switch to a cheaper model or a different franchise.
