For many people, it’s time to put on the dirndl, pull on the leather socks and gorge on white sausages and copious amounts of beer for the next two weeks. Oktoberfest will take place in Munich until October 3. Oktoberfest can be quickly reached from Switzerland. So which mode of transport is best to choose?
If you want to travel to Oktoberfest by train, you can get a very good transportation service from Zurich. There are six connections per day to Munich with a journey time of 3 hours 31 minutes. But this thing ain’t cheap. Without the half-fare card, a trip costs just under 100 francs, with the half-fare card it costs “only” 82.70 francs. Passengers with a GA card still pay 65 francs. However, if you are planning a trip to Munich, it would be beneficial to buy your train ticket as early as possible. So you can take advantage of super-saving tickets and save a few francs from it.
Advantage of coming by train: Theresienwiese, the festival site of the folk festival, can be reached on foot from the train station in 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, the S-Bahn runs directly to Oktoberfest almost every minute. By the way: From most other departure points in Switzerland the fastest route is via Zurich. For example, the journey time from Basel is 4 hours 31 minutes. Direct trains from Zurich to Munich also go to Zurich Airport, Winterthur, St. Gallen and St. Margrethen also stops in SG.
Travel time by car is not much different from traveling by train. It takes just over 3 hours 30 minutes by car from Zurich and 4 hours 30 minutes from Basel. Finding a parking place is a difficult task, there is no parking in Theresienwiese. A barrier ring will be established around the festival area, where parking is prohibited during Oktoberfest. Therefore, the city recommends that you either park outside Munich or leave your car in a city center car park and take the S-Bahn or U-Bahn from there. However, the journey takes another 20 to 30 minutes.
The car also needs a driver who is determined to stay away from alcohol. Blick reporter Sandro Zilian has only just proven that it is possible to be sober at Oktoberfest.
The cheapest way to get to Oktoberfest is by bus. Flixbus offers the best conditions here. There are ten connections per day from Zurich and these take four to five hours depending on departure time. The cost of almost all excursions: 29 francs.
Oktoberfest can also be reached by bus from Basel. You’re a bit limited in terms of time as there are only two or three connections a day. The trip is extremely cheap. A trip costs only 18 francs and takes about five and a half hours. Winterthur and St. Thanks to the stops in St. Gallen, this connection is also interesting for eastern Switzerland.
