Co-operation with police: British supermarkets fund investigations into theft

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

British supermarket chains are financially supporting police investigations.

Supermarket chains want to give investigators a total of £600,000. In return, the authority needs to compare the thieves’ recordings from security cameras with databases and also use facial recognition software.

Shoplifting in the UK has more than doubled in the last six years, reaching eight million by 2022, according to forecasts from trade association BRC. The annual loss is around one billion lira. Reasons given are the significantly increasing cost of living and imitators via viral videos on Tiktok. The perpetrators are usually young people.

Companies accuse police of not taking theft cases seriously enough. Of the 339,206 cases reported between April 2022 and March 2023, fewer than 50,000 were charged. In just over half of the cases, investigations were stopped before the perpetrators were identified. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the development was unacceptable. (SDA)
