80 employees face dismissal: Bern-based e-bike manufacturer Flyer is threatened with mass layoffs

A quarter of the e-bike maker’s workforce could soon lose their jobs.

Employees at e-bike maker Flyer are probably not sleeping very well right now. There is a risk of mass layoffs at the Huttwil BE-based company. Flyer had already announced several job cuts in July. Now everything has to get worse. Berner Zeitung quotes an internal letter sent to the workforce as follows: “We may have to lay off around 80 employees.” That’s almost a quarter of the current 300 employees!

Flyer has experienced huge growth in the e-bike boom over the last few years. The company is now running out of steam. Those responsible justify the possible step in the letter with a large decrease in sales figures. “Demand has been falling since the end of last year. “We are talking about halving sales and orders within two years.”

Energy prices, inflation and overstock will put additional pressure on the company.

Will there be a big demolition on October 13?

As the company writes, major layoffs are not yet final. But it is difficult to imagine how the company can survive despite such profound difficulties without taking drastic measures. The fact that the company has initiated the consultation process shows how unstable the situation is. This is a necessary step if a company is planning mass layoffs. Over the next two weeks, the workforce will have the opportunity to find alternatives to the reductions.

Negotiations for the social plan are also currently being evaluated. Those responsible would like to provide information about the results of the consultation process on 28 September. If the company sees no way out other than downsizing, notice of termination must be given to those affected by October 13. (smt)
