Label against phone terror and suspicious brokers: “Some insurers are afraid to fire their brokers”

Now they’re ringing again, cell phones and landline connections; annoying phone terror is the agenda of the day. The reason: The new premiums of the health insurance company will be announced soon and there will be a strong increase in premiums again. Suspicious brokers are booming because of this.

Not much has changed in recent years, despite the industry’s declaration of intent to stop this public nuisance. Quite the contrary: broker scams are getting more and more treacherous, with many disguising this call as a survey or a sales pitch about wine. The main purpose: to make an appointment with an insurance agent.

Holey industry deal

“Anyone who receives unsolicited advertising calls disguised as surveys should always check where the caller got their phone number and for which customer they’re calling,” says Felix Schneuwly, 63, health insurance specialist at the Compis comparison service. “If the caller is not able to answer immediately, the call should be terminated quickly and precisely.”

There is an agreement in the industry to avoid annoying calls. However, this situation is full of loopholes and is not legally binding. Therefore, it is necessary to voluntarily opt out of questionable customer advertisements.

This disclaimer comparison service is awarded the “clean customer advertising” label by Comparis. 16 health insurance companies bought it this year, 15 of them don’t even advertise phones. What is striking: only KPT is represented in the top 10 of the largest health insurance companies, EGK and Agrisano are recognized all over Switzerland.

Broker out of control

Others are small regional insurance companies such as Einsiedler and Sumiswalder Krankenkasse, as well as health insurance companies Birchmeier, Luzerner Hinterland, Rhenusana and Wädenswi.

Really big crates are missing. Schneuwly has an explanation that isn’t in favor of the best: “We’re assuming the big funds aren’t doing everything they can to really control their brokers.” Nor do they want to completely eradicate the telephone terror: “Some insurers are afraid to fire brokers who remove the insured from the table. For the simple reason that they can enter the contest.” Result: You do not meet the label criteria.

Many customers will certainly appreciate transparent and serious advice due to the announced increase in premiums. The problem with dubious brokers: They sell customers insurance they don’t need. It is therefore in the interest of all concerned that the industry finally commits itself to ending telephone terror.
