New research shows: Nearly one in every two big companies falls victim to cyberattacks

Nearly every two major companies in Switzerland have been victims of a cyberattack at least once. (icon image)

This is demonstrated by the Swiss-VR-Monitor, a semi-annual publication run by the swissVR Board Association in collaboration with the auditing and consulting firm Deloitte Switzerland and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, published on Monday. In the research, 400 board members were asked questions about cyber resilience.

Unlike large companies, SMEs appear to be significantly less affected: only 18 percent of companies with fewer than 50 employees reported a serious attack.

Deloitte explained that the correlation between company size and attack frequency is because large companies are exposed to more attacks around the world and present greater targets to cybercriminals. “Another explanation for the so-called lower concern for small companies is the partial failure to report such incidents to the board,” he said.

No clear strategy

Action needs to be taken here: Almost half of companies say they don’t have a clear cyber strategy. 30 percent of companies have not appointed a board of directors to adequately manage cyber problems. After all, eight out of ten supervisory bodies have a risk policy that addresses cyber threats.

Cyber attacks often have serious operational consequences. The most common result by far is job interruption. 42 percent of companies affected by the cyber attack are in this situation. A quarter of the attacked companies experienced data leaks, and 20 percent experienced product failures and faulty services.

Besides lost sales due to business interruptions, there is also the risk of high follow-up costs, such as data recovery. Only 7% of the companies that were attacked experienced asset outflows. However, Deloitte wrote that the financial results should not be taken lightly.
