After two months at sea: Australian leaves dog behind after rescue

Crashed Australian Tim Shaddock was in the Pacific with his dog Bella in an unmaneuvered catamaran for more than two months – now leaving the animal behind in Mexico after being rescued. The Shaddock dog gave it to the captain of the tuna trawler boat that saved his life, fishing company boss Antonio Guerra told Mexican media on Wednesday.

The hybrid bitch encountered the 54-year-old Australian shortly before she left Mexico – unable to find another home for her stray dog, she took him on her boat.

“I’m still alive”

Shaddock and Bella left Mexico’s coastal city of La Paz in April for a 6,000-mile journey to French Polynesia. However, soon after, his catamaran “Aloha Toa” was damaged in a storm. For weeks, the disabled boat and its two passengers drifted across the Pacific – until the crew of the tuna trawler rescued two boats more than 2200 kilometers from either shore.

On Tuesday, the amateur sailor set foot in the Mexican port of Manzanillo for the first time – skinny, with a messy beard and hair, but surprisingly physically fit and in a good mood. “I’m still alive,” he told reporters. After the supplies on the boat ran out, he made a living on rainwater and raw fish.

The Australian said he had “very, very, very bad days” at sea. It was her destined four-legged companion that helped him above all else. Bella was just “incredible”, “she’s so much braver than me,” she praised the bitch. “I’m so glad he’s still alive.” (AFP)
