Various heat waves are turning holiday countries like Italy, Greece and Spain into scorching ovens. Temperatures have already exceeded 40 degrees in some places.
As persistent extreme heat makes outdoor activities nearly impossible and can cause health problems, the question arises: Should I start my vacation in the south anyway? And if I cancel can I get my money back?
General answer: no. However: If the State Department or the Federal Public Health Agency advises against traveling to a particular destination, passengers can change their reservation for a certain period of time free of charge.
Hotelplan spokesperson Muriel Wolf Landau explains: “If someone wants to cancel or rebook a trip due to higher temperatures, normal cancellation policies apply.” However, the tour operator is not currently recording any cancellations or rebookings where temperature is cited as a reason.
Kuoni spokesperson Markus Flick also states that the tour operator has not yet received a single call on this issue. In principle, current terms and conditions apply and travelers are advised to take the usual precautionary measures in the heat – stay in the shade during lunch hours and drink plenty of fluids. “In special cases, when heat poses a demonstrable threat to a customer, you can contact us and we will try to find an individual solution,” adds Flick.
According to Gian-Paul Civelli (62) of travel insurance Hanse Merkur International in Vaduz FL, “heat insurance” is also not an issue at the moment: “As a travel insurance company, we can’t afford this type of weather because feelings about it are often Too much. subjective: Some people like it. Still find 40 degrees nice, while others have reached the limit at 32 degrees.»
Civelli adds that the Hanse Merkur emergency call center has not yet seen an increase in call volume despite the extreme temperatures.
Anyone who booked the flight individually and not through an operator should not expect a refund either. After all, most individually booked hotels can be canceled in a short time.
