Rising prices for shared rooms are already creating a big hole in many students’ household budgets. As Blick can learn, there is now a cost increase on the catering front as well. For example, prices in some canteens increase for the new university term.
First of all, the University of Zurich (UZH), which has close to 28,000 students, will increase its menu prices from 1 September. Students now pay CHF 6.10 for the vegetarian menu – 0.30 CHF more than before. And the meat menu is now 7.50 francs – 60 centimeters more expensive. Prices increase more for employees and outsiders than for students. Prices went up more there, as meat menus had a greater impact on the climate.
UZH felt compelled to take this step because of rising food prices and personnel costs. That’s what it says in an internal letter that Blick has. The decision was not easy. However, the decision was made in consultation with student representatives.
After all, UZH still has a Foifer menu: over-produced food is served at the price of 5 francs per menu from a certain time. On demand, he says, the offer is very popular and helps against food waste.
UZH canteens are operated by the ZFV gastronomy group. The company underlines that no price increases are planned for other universities and colleges. ZFV also operates some canteens of the University of Bern, the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK) and the Northwest Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (FHNW) and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).
Another big canteen operator is SV Group. Gastro Group confirms to Blick that food and beverage prices will increase depending on the canteen in the new period. “Menu prices have been increased in certain places, and snack or coffee prices elsewhere,” a spokesperson said. He doesn’t want to reveal more. At Blick’s request, both ETH and ZHAW announced that the prices in their canteens would not change.
At the University of Basel, things are different. But there is an even bigger change. The canteens are now looked after by the SV Group – previously ZFV was in charge. But the prices will not change significantly: students will continue to pay CHF 7.50 for the cheapest menu. This is a vegetarian menu. There is meat on the plate for 9.50 francs.
FHNW is currently reviewing a “moderate adjustment in prices” at the Olten campus – but a decision is still awaited. st. Gallen University has no price adjustments. The operator is Migros Gastronomy.
