Call of Duty

The first “Call of Duty” appeared 20 years ago. At that time it was difficult to predict which giant would emerge from it. The first-person shooter franchise now has 18 (!) additional branches and has sold almost half a billion copies to date. The last issue, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, was released last year. The game grossed $1 billion in 10 days.

candy Crush Saga

The colorful mobile puzzle game has more than one billion players. For comparison: Only about 200 million people worldwide play on a game console. That’s why entering the mobile gaming market is a top priority for Microsoft: Xbox boss Phil Spencer, 55, said last fall that “Candy Crush” was one of the main reasons for the takeover.

(World of) Warcraft

Strategy and role-playing games from developer Blizzard are among the veterans of their genre. The first game in the “Warcraft” series was released in 1995. However, its most well-known spin-off is “World of Warcraft”, which was released in 2004. It has long been the world’s most popular multiplayer role-playing game. Even today, almost 20 years later, almost two million people still play it every day.

Another branch of the «Warcraft» series is the online trading card game «Hearthstone», which is also available on smartphones and tablets. Despite being free to download, the game earns around $20 million per month via microtransactions.

The free online shooter game came out in 2016 and had around 300 million registered players at its peak. A sequel was released last year.

Especially in the esports industry, “Overwatch” has become a fixture in North America and Asia. For game developer Blizzard, the game has become the poster child for competitive gamers. In South Korea, it even became the most popular game at times in the internet cafes common there.
