Extreme heat continues to affect a large part of the northern hemisphere. In Italy, for example, peaks of 35 to 36 degrees were expected on Sunday in the shade. 16 cities, including Rome, Florence and Bologna, were still on red alert for health hazards posed by the heat.
Temperatures are expected to rise further in Italy at the beginning of the week. The Italian weather service fears “one of the most intense heat waves of all time”.
Authorities in Greece are concerned about the risk of forest fires. This was exacerbated by strong winds over the Aegean, as announced by the Greek Ministry of Climate Protection. The ancient city of the Acropolis in the capital Athens was scheduled to remain closed for more than six hours on Sunday for the third consecutive day.
Germany is also groaning under the scorching heat. Temperatures were particularly high in the south and east. In Möhrendorf-Kleinseebach in Bavaria, Germany’s highest temperature so far of the year was 38.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday. On Saturday in Berlin, the thermometer rose to 35 degrees.
In the United States, the weather service NWS warned of “an oppressive and extremely dangerous heatwave” with poor air quality in parts of the west and south. From the notorious Death Valley on California’s west coast, weather services reported 51 degrees on Saturday and even 54 degrees was expected there on Sunday.
Phoenix, in southwestern Arizona, reached 47 degrees on Saturday – the 16th day in a row for the city with temperatures as high as 43 degrees Fahrenheit. In parts of Southern California, where firefighters have been battling fierce fires since Friday and thousands of people have had to be evacuated to safety, the thermometer has risen to 45 degrees.
Globally, heat is one of the deadliest weather events, according to the UN Meteorological Organization. According to a recent study, high temperatures last summer killed more than 60,000 people in Europe alone. According to experts, global warming is progressing at twice the rate of the global average.
