More than a decade after a total of eleven bodies were found on Long Island, New York, police have arrested a suspect. Suffolk County Police Chief Rodney Harrison said on Friday the man was arrested in Manhattan as part of the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders on Thursday night. “Currently in police custody.”
Accordingly, an official indictment was expected during the day. According to media reports, the suspect is a New York architect.
The mysterious case began in 2010 and left the country in suspense. While searching for a missing prostitute, researchers slowly found corpses and body parts in a remote part of Gilgo Beach on Long Island. In five cases the victims were prostitutes.
The idea of a serial killer roaming the area scared everyone. But authorities didn’t then assume there was a single serial culprit.
The responsible prosecutor at the time, Thomas Spota, said in the spring of 2011 that “there is no evidence that all the bodies were the work of a murderer”. Instead, the area around Gilgo Beach was “used for a time as a hiding place for burials”.
It was initially unclear which murders the suspect, now arrested, was charged with. Authorities announced a press conference for Friday afternoon (local time). (sweat/AFP)
