There were major problems with card payments at all 955 Coop branches on Monday. Without coins or small items in your trouser pocket or purse, nothing at Coop would work. Everyone who wanted to pay by card or Twint looked old. Reason: a technical malfunction.
Everything went well again on Tuesday. Coop claimed responsibility for the upsetting incident. “It was a technical error affecting the network connection with a payment service provider,” said a spokesperson for Blick.
This is a pain for the Swiss retailer: because a self-made breakdown costs money. Especially since the wholesaler is not insured against failure of the card terminals. This was confirmed by Coop of the “Aargauer Zeitung”. Coop cannot transfer the damage to a payment service provider.
several million francs
According to the “Aargauer Zeitung”, considering Coop’s annual retail sales of 19.6 billion francs, the company’s losses due to the disruption are likely to amount to several million francs.
Coop does not give a specific number to Blick. The spokesperson simply admits: “Failed card payments impacted sales.” (pbe)
