Stable flight operations are more important: Switzerland is less punctual than ever

class=”sc-29f61514-0 fQbOYE”>

For the Swiss, punctuality is less serious than flight cancellations.

The top priority is the stability of flight operations – at the expense of punctuality, the SDA agency reported. Swiss airline is more punctual than ever. Head of Operations Oliver Buchholzer told the agency on Wednesday that it was important not to cancel flights. Switzerland is doing well, only two percent cancel. But this also means that many flights have been delayed.

Swiss has set a goal of at least 80 percent of flights being delayed by more than 15 minutes. In 2023, this could only be achieved by 65 percent. In May and June, 21 percent were more than 30 minutes late.

Decisive factors for punctuality problems, according to Buchholzer, are bottlenecks in European air traffic control, weather conditions, personnel and infrastructure conditions, and – an increasingly common problem – strikes.

busy weekend

The airline wants to overcome the problems with more staff in the summer. As early as 2022, 800 new cabin crew members were recruited. There will be more than 1,000 new ones this year. There are also 70 new pilots.

Next Friday, when school is over in many cantons, the airline expects its first busy day with around 18,000 passengers. It’s a challenge for ground handling company Swissport. (SDA)
