10 minutes after takeoff: Helicopter crash near Mount Everest – 6 dead

Six people on board were killed when a tourist helicopter crashed near Mount Everest in Nepal. According to Nepal’s civil aviation authority, there were five Mexicans and their Nepali pilots on board. The Manang Air helicopter took off Tuesday morning near Lukla, the gateway for many climbers to climb the 8,849-metre peak of Mount Everest.

It was said that the helicopter would fly to the capital Kathmandu. However, after about ten minutes of flight time, the radio was disconnected. The aviation authority told AFP news agency that helicopters could not land in the area where the bodies were found. Therefore, the emergency services set out on foot to retrieve the bodies.

Flight safety in Nepal is notorious

All 72 people on board were killed in a plane crash in the western part of the country in January. Republic’s challenging tracks in the Himalayas are often remote and surrounded on all sides by snow-capped peaks – their approach is a huge challenge even for experienced pilots. In addition, weather conditions in the mountain region can change abruptly.

However, flight safety in Nepal also has a bad reputation; the aviation industry often lacks adequate training and maintenance. Airlines from Nepal are banned from all EU airspace for safety reasons.
