The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) counted 3.2 million overnight stays in May, according to final figures released Thursday. This is 13.6 percent more than the same month last year. However, compared to the pre-Corona level in May 2019, overnight stays increased by 6.5 percent.

The recovery was once again driven by guests from abroad. The number of overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 32 percent compared to the previous year and reached 1.7 million. On the other hand, there were slightly fewer overnight stays among domestic tourists – minus 2 percent to 1.5 million overnights.

About 2 percent more than in May 2022

Most overnight stays among foreign tourists came from the US, with 281,000 guests in May, a good 42 percent increase over the previous year. US tourists have even outstripped Germany, normally the most important country of origin for the Swiss hotel industry. Those traveling north from the neighboring country made 279,000 overnight stays, about 2 percent more than in May 2022.

That means Swiss hotels are on record track this year. The number of overnight stays had already increased in January (+36%), February (+14%), March (+4%) and April (+12%). From January to May there are 15.5 million overnight stays. This is almost 15 percent more than the previous year. And best of all, 3.5 percent more than in the record year 2019.

So far this year, 7.3 million night stays have been booked by foreign guests, which is a 36 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Domestic guests of 8.2 million generated almost 1 percent more overnight stays.
