CS quality ranking: Zug and Basel-Stadt remain ahead in the cantonal settlement competition

This is the result of the Credit Suisse Location Quality Ranking (LQI) 2023, released on Tuesday. The canton of Zug is clearly at the top, ahead of Basel-Stadt, Zurich and Geneva.

According to CS, Zug and Basel-Stadt have “a very advantageous combination of attractiveness factors”. The cantons of Valais and Jura, each with challenging topography, were at the bottom.

Taxes continue to lose their validity in the face of competition. According to the CS study, non-tax factors such as availability of qualified specialists in place competition are likely to gain importance given the OECD’s upcoming minimum tax.

Due to the better development in terms of workforce, for example, the canton of Ausserrhoden formed a middle row at the expense of Obwalden and rose to the 12th rank.

Overall, the 2023 rankings relative to CS have again remained very stable because the underlying framework conditions usually only change gradually. However, in a longer-term comparison since 2014, the cantons of Geneva and Vaud have moved up twelve and five places respectively, mainly thanks to more attractive taxation of companies.

SQI is based on a total of seven quantitative sub-indicators. These include, for example, the tax burden, the availability of highly skilled and skilled workers, or the accessibility of a place.
