The last burger in Deitingen SO: the cult pub on the A1 is history

Sunday was a sad day for thousands of regulars at the iconic Deitingen SO service area on the A1, the highway axis across Switzerland. Last time you had a burger and fries on the Highway. And in the style of the 60s. It’s truly iconic.

Since 1968, every kid who has driven from east to west – or vice versa – has known about the gas station with its curved concrete roof. It literally hovers over the pumps. And it’s apparently been making me want to take a break for decades. The architect of the clever construction, Heinz Isler from Zollikon ZH, an architect known throughout Switzerland, died in 2009 in Bern. Specialization: so-called shell structures, such as the service area in Deitingen.

His legacy includes not only the shells in the Deitingen Süd service area. They are listed monuments and therefore protected from destruction. Its bold curved roofs also encompass the Langenthal BE tennis center, the Grenchen SO tennis hall, the Wyss garden center in Zuchwil SO and the Aviation and Flab Museum in Dübendorf ZH.

But in Deitingen, the focus was not just on architecture, but also on lifestyle in the USA of the 1960s. As in the USA in the 1960s, weary drivers on an empty stomach could eat at a restaurant.

“The Cindy’s Diner concept no longer works.”Raoul Koenig, CEO of Marché

But there’s also good news: “We were able to offer all employees a new job,” said Raoul König, CEO of the Marché restaurant chain, to which Cindy’s now belongs. “Unfortunately, the Cindy’s Diner concept no longer works today. Passers-by do not want to take a break of half an hour or more. Everything should go much faster today.”

Burger King must jump into the breach. “This will allow us to serve significantly more people in a very short time,” he says. Unfortunately, CEO König explains that there is no room for nostalgia. “The price of the concession was increased significantly, and while Cindy’s Diner has always done very well, the turnover would not be enough to break even.”
