History was made in Zermatt on Friday: there is now a direct cable car connection to Cervinia in Italy. The offer is for premium customers with a round trip ticket price of CHF 240. The new Matterhorn Alpine Crossing cost 60 million francs.
Ropeway operators are hoping for Asian tourists, among other things. Because less and less money can be earned with ski tourism. “With global warming, the ski season is getting shorter and shorter,” says Lucerne tourism professor Jürg Stettler from “NZZ am Sonntag”. Asian guests will help fill the facilities outside of the winter season. The goal is a consistently high level of occupancy – because it’s the only way to fill the crates.
In addition to Zermatt, other destinations such as Titlis also rely on this tactic. However, Jungfrau Railways is clearly a pioneer among Asian guests. “Today Jungfraujoch is part of a European tour, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris,” says director Urs Kessler (60). Since 2020, the journey to the top by train took just 47 minutes. The journey to Jungfraujoch is pretty much the same as the return journey on the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing.
“We want to create proposals for guests from the Far East to stay with us,” said Franz Julen (64), Chairman of the Board, at the opening of the new ropeway.
Above all, Julen wants to attract individual travelers and small groups. At the same time, he stresses that Switzerland should continue to be the highest priority. However, the question arises as to whether they are even willing to pay the high price. After all: it’s “only” 147.50 francs round trip with the Half-Mouse travel card.
Other cable car operators, such as the Hoher Kasten cable car in Appenzell Innerrhoden, no longer accept the GA or Half-Mouse travel card. Because half of the mobile population in Switzerland, around 3 million people, already own a GA travel card or half fare card, and this trend is on the rise. As a result, operators lose important sales. (kae)
