New ranking: These are the largest online stores in Switzerland

Switzerland continues to buy a lot online. But sales in 2022 fell for the first time after many years of uncontrolled growth.

But not for all companies: A third of the 30 strongest online platforms and stores also grew in Switzerland last year, while the rest recorded stagnant or even declining numbers. This is the conclusion of the consulting firm Carpathia, which annually reviews the largest online stores in Switzerland and released its latest sales ranking today Thursday.

Also new: The ranking now includes 50 companies compared to 30 companies last year. Blick presents the most important ones.

Clothing giant Zalando is consolidating its superior position in the market and is the clear leader. Sales in 2020 were still CHF 1044 million. This means that Zalando sales in Switzerland have increased by two-thirds (67.6 percent) in two years.

Meanwhile, Digitec and Galaxus, both of which are part of the Migros universe, remain clearly the leading online platforms in Switzerland, well ahead of their rivals Microspot (Coop) and Manor (Maus-Frères). The online shopping store Galaxus, in particular, has grown significantly over the past two years, almost 85 percent. And so it outstripped Amazon.de.

On the other hand, the online stores of Interdiscount, Ebay and Ex Libris have recorded figures that have decreased significantly over the past two years. The Jelmoli online store has also decreased significantly. The much-discussed Chinese clothing giant Shein, on the other hand, can only be ranked 36th.

A closer look at the product segments saw significant growth in the “Entertainment, Hobby, Toys” and “Food/Other” segments. “Health and Beauty”, “Home and Life”, “Sports and Sports Equipment”, “Multimedia/IT” and “Office” only moved a little, that is, stopped. Net decreases were experienced in the “Watches & Jewellery”, “Universal Mail Order”, “Fashion” and “Media” sectors.

New approaches are needed

Carpathia analyzes that stores that specialize in specific product areas and focus specifically on price and availability tend to lose the most sales and market share.

Added the thesis presented by consumer researcher Johannes Altmann at the “The Future of Retail” conference a few days ago. According to him, the price and availability model is no longer sufficient. The reason for this is that many people are tired of consuming and again give importance to quality rather than quantity, that is, they shop consciously. The result was “Retailers and marketplaces that can offer referral and curation are in demand.”
