The solar industry had a real boom last year.

Solar power is becoming increasingly important in the Swiss electricity mix. More than one gigawatt (GW) of additional photovoltaic capacity was installed in Germany for the first time in 2022, according to the Swissolar trade association. Based on this, about one terawatt hour (TWh) of electricity can now be produced per year. It also means that solar power generation has grown by more than 40 percent for the third year in a row.

Exact statistics on solar power in Switzerland for 2022 won’t be released until 13 July, but Swissolar estimates that solar has already contributed 5.8 percent to the country’s electricity supply, with 3.3 TWh last year. In 2021 it was 4.9 percent.

About 200,000 photovoltaic systems

And the expansion continues: According to Swissolar, about 200,000 photovoltaic systems currently supply about 7 percent of electricity needs. In addition, the association expects further growth in the construction of new facilities by around one fifth in 2023. Swissolar writes that most companies’ order books are full.

This is necessary, after all, the aim is to increase electricity generation in Switzerland to 35 TWh by 2035 using solar energy. And by 2050, about 45 TWh of electricity should be produced by photovoltaics. Expanding solar power is an important pillar for achieving climate goals set by the federal government.

Swissolar also broke records among its members: its membership exceeded 1,000 for the first time and had a total of over 10,000 employees. And here too, further growth can be expected. After all, from 2024 the first apprentices will be trained as part of the newly launched solar apprenticeship. (SDA/kae)
