European companies’ prospects in China have become increasingly bleak. (archive image)

Amid rising risks and an unpredictable environment, 64 percent of companies surveyed said it was becoming more difficult to do business in China.

The companies checked “how many eggs they wanted to keep in their Chinese basket” while the EU chamber in Beijing presented the results. 11 percent have already withdrawn their investments in China. 10 percent have already moved or plan to move their Asian hubs out of China.

62 percent complained of missing job opportunities due to lack of market access or regulatory barriers in China. The number increased by 20 percent compared to the previous year. Politics is affecting commerce more and more. 59 percent said the environment was politicized—an increase of 9 percent from the previous year.

This time the annual survey of 570 companies was carried out in collaboration with management consultancy Roland Berger in February and early March.
