Price increase of 74 percent: cancel discount for mountain trip, Half-Mouse travel pass and GA travel pass

1/6
Alpstein Pass: For many day-trippers, Hohe Kasten will be much more expensive next year.

The Hoher Kasten cable car, which ascends the mountain of the same name from Alpstein, is a popular destination for day-trippers. st. The summit on the cantonal border between Gallen and Appenzell Innerrhoden offers a magnificent view. Also, the valley station at Brulisau AI can be reached in just 80 minutes from much of Zurich. This is particularly attractive to GA and Half-Mouse travel card holders who pay CHF 14 for a single trip and CHF 23 return.

At least until now. Next year, there will be no stone left unturned in Alpstein. GA or Half-Mouse travel card holders will have to pay 74 percent more for a future return trip: 40 francs instead of 23 francs.

Covered train disembarks at Alliance Swisspass

The Hoher Kasten cable car becomes the Gallic village of the Swiss cable car landscape and exits the Alliance Swisspass. This means that the GA and Half-Mouse travel card will no longer be valid in 2024.

Chairman of the Board, Emil Koller, explains in the SRF-Regionaljournal that the primary goal is to “simplify the price structure”. There are currently more than 150 different types of tickets. From next year there will actually be only one price: 40 francs. There are also a few exceptions: Children and teenagers up to 16 travel free. And there is still a discount for groups and combined offers.

The withdrawal from Alliance Swisspass is surprising: According to Emil Koller, two out of three guests currently hold a GA or half-fee card. So instead of 46 francs, you go to 23. Only a significantly smaller fraction of customers will benefit from the reduced price from 46 to 40 francs for a round trip next year. The cable car therefore makes a risky bet.

There is still a discount: these are the prices in Hoher Kasten at the moment.

The future will show whether the Swisspass client will be put off by the new pricing policy.

Other sightseeing trains are still there

About 250 shipping companies in the country are part of the Alliance. These include almost all well-known excursion railways, such as the railways to Jungfraujoch, Titlis, Pilatus or Säntis, which offer 50 percent discount to holders of a GA or Half Fare travel card. The cog railway to Rigi in central Switzerland is free even for GA owners.

Chairman Koller puts the new pricing strategy into perspective regarding the regional newspaper: The Hoher Kasten cable car should have increased ticket prices from 46 to 56 francs next year due to more expensive energy and other costs. . Now you have decided on another variable. (smt)
