Central Switzerland launched the national bag project with far-reaching results: Migros has been collecting plastic waste since May 2021, initially in the Lucerne cooperative. Over the past two years, the product range has been gradually expanded. Migros cooperatives operate a total of 109 collection points today. In the canton of Friborg, in the canton of Bern and in the cities of Lausanne and Zurich, customers can purchase a collection bag for a fee. And fill it in selected branches. According to the retailer, about 500 tons of plastic end up in trash cans. This roughly equates to the weight of the Airbus A380, the world’s largest and heaviest passenger aircraft.
Migros has been collecting plastic bottles at its branches since 2014, and the collection bags and all other plastic packaging can be disposed of separately. Migros reaches a positive conclusion two years after the start of the project. “We had very good experiences and the customer feedback was very positive,” the Migros media office said to Blick’s question. The expansion of the plastics collection is constantly being studied. The capacities at the existing collection points are far from exhausted.
Even if the collected plastic is finally granulated in Switzerland: First it goes abroad, to Vorarlberg (A). According to Migros, there is no suitable sorting facility in Switzerland. The declared goal of reusing up to 70 percent of the plastic collected has not yet been reached, either: “Currently, more and more sewer pipes are made from recycled plastic.” The loop only closes in a few cases – for example, in certain cleaning agent packages. Another obstacle is that the use of recycled plastic in food is not yet allowed in Switzerland.
The Migros collection project not only aroused excitement at the beginning. Industry association Swiss Retail Federation criticized Migros for going it alone. Because the orange giant is also part of the “Collection 2025” project, where the industry is working on a comprehensive solution similar to PET, aluminum or glass. The retailer reported that it continues to welcome Migros’ efforts to find industry solutions. But with his own project, he could gain significant experience that would also be useful in the design of a comprehensive plastics recycling system.
Migros leaves open whether this is also a fee. You’ve had very good experiences with charge bags so far. Also, since it’s really just plastic in bags.
When it comes to recycling, Switzerland is among the best. However, when it comes to recycling used plastic packaging, neighboring countries do better. Migros wants to change this with its national eco-attack. Now the situation is serious. Migros cannot afford another false start. For the project, it entered into a long-term partnership with Innoplastics and Innorecycling, two companies specializing in plastic recycling. They recycle collected plastic carrier bags, cling film and yogurt containers, as well as the plastic packaging of products shipped online. It even takes back plastic waste from retailers such as Migros and Coop.
It goes into the plastic Migros collection bag. It ranges from 90 centimeters to 2.50 francs, depending on its size. For example: A roll of 10 bags of 17 liters each costs 9 francs, the 35 liter version costs 17 francs. These bags are made from 85 percent recycled raw materials. In the future, these can be deposited in new plastic collection containers at the branches of the Migros Cooperative Lucerne. Ulrich Rotzinger
