The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Administration (BLV) wrote on Thursday that the industry has not adequately fulfilled its disclosure obligation for products made of or decorated with fur. All fur and fur products must be labeled with information on the animal type, origin and production method.
Last winter season, BLV conducted 131 checks at points of sale and internet providers. About two-thirds of these resulted in complaints due to incorrect or under-declaration of products. In 88 percent of cases, companies made up for lost time. The FSVO ordered ten times and in one case initiated criminal proceedings.
BLV also checked 6632 fur products. Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) were declared true, while the rest were either undeclared or false. Almost half of the complaints were related to the fur collars of the jackets; Most of the offending products came from raccoon dogs, arctic foxes and coyotes.
The FSVO notes that fur reporting has not improved significantly since controls began in 2014 and regulations became more stringent. He wants to recheck his outlets next winter. It also wants to tighten the sanction and impose more orders and fines.
