During the corona pandemic, the bike promised guaranteed virus-free travel. And fresh air and exercise for those who suffer from home. But if you wanted to switch from the old “Göppel” to a modern bike, you had to dig into your pockets a lot more than usual.

Bicycles ran out during Corona in Switzerland – as rapidly growing demand far outstripped supply. At the same time, delivery times and, above all, delivery costs have increased.

But the epidemic volatility in demand is a thing of the past, and with that, sunny times for the industry. Bicycles, brake pads or suspension forks are no longer scarce. What the bike dealers ordered at the time of the explosion has now been delivered and the tanks are full.

You’ll also notice this when browsing the websites of online retailers. For example, significant discounts are advertised as “mid-season discounts” even though the weather is suitable for cycling. And that’s in times of inflation and rising energy costs.

“This is also because vendors are still in burst mode, but deliveries are arriving with a significant delay,” says Martin Platter of the Velosuisse association.

At the same time, the managing director of the Swiss Bicycle and E-Bike Suppliers Association points out that bicycle prices have risen sharply in 2020 and 2021. “Now the price level is correcting downwards again.”
