According to the will of the National Council, the federal government, together with the cantons, must provide more study and internship places for future doctors. On Tuesday, the Grand Chamber accepted a corresponding motion by Benjamin Roduit (Centre/US).
The National Council took its decision by 144 votes in favor and 43 against with 4 abstentions. The Council of States must then consider the matter.
Roduit justified his demand with the shortage of doctors in Switzerland. Nowadays, about forty percent of doctors come from abroad. The former headmaster of a high school in Sion also criticized the fact that the percentage of students who failed entrance exams or examinations after the first year of study was too high, considering the quality of high school education and compared to other courses.
Economy Minister Guy Parmelin unsuccessfully requested that the motion be rejected. He recognized that this was an important problem. However, the cantons are responsible. (sda)
