New iPhones regard roller coaster rides as car accidents

The accident detection integrated by Apple in the iPhone 14 warns the emergency services in case of an emergency – but is apparently not always correct. Rescue workers were sent to amusement parks several times.

It’s one of Apple’s most acclaimed features for the iPhone 14: Accident Detection. In the event of an accident, the smartphone automatically alerts the emergency services and directs them to the scene of the accident. It’s just silly for the iPhone to send an alarm if the owner isn’t in danger.

This has happened several times since the iPhone 14 models launched in September, the Washington Post reports. Cases have been reported in the United States where accident detection has struck while iPhone users are on roller coasters and other amusement park rides.

Because the movements of the rides for the iPhones were indistinguishable from those during an accident, the mobile phones called the emergency number. “The owner of this iPhone was in a serious car accident and is not responding to his phone,” a computer voice told emergency services and forwarded the GPS data.

Apple’s iPhones use sensor data to detect and evaluate acceleration and braking processes using artificial intelligence. According to Apple, its accident detection algorithms are trained with millions of accident data, car journeys and crash tests.

When an accident is detected, a warning appears on the screen for 10 seconds. After that, a 10-second countdown begins, accompanied by an alarm tone. When the countdown is over, the phone will automatically call emergency services and send a message and location. If the smartphone user has defined an emergency contact in the device settings, they will receive an SMS.

The Washington Post confronted Apple with its investigation into the unfounded emergency messages sent. An Apple spokesperson replied that the technology is generally more secure and that Apple will continue to improve it over time.
