Young Swiss women in particular suffer from psychological stress

In 2022, 85 percent of the Swiss population felt healthy and 83 percent happy. At the same time, a third suffer from permanent health problems. According to the five-year study, psychological problems have increased compared to 2017.

These are the first findings of the largest health survey in Switzerland, which is carried out every five years and which the Federal Statistical Office presented on Friday in Neuchâtel. The age group from 18 to 24 years and especially young women were particularly affected by psychological suffering.

There is an increase in psychological stress, despite 85 percent of people being happy. The share of people who are moderately or seriously affected has increased from 15 percent to 18 percent compared to 2017.

In 2022, psychological stress will be especially high among 15 to 24-year-olds (22 percent), and especially among women: 9 percent experience severe psychological stress and another 20 percent moderate psychological stress. 18 percent of young women suffered from anxiety disorders in the past year.

The share of smokers fell from 27 percent in 2017 to 24 percent. E-cigarettes and other cigarette alternatives were mainly smoked by young adults. When it comes to alcohol, consumption patterns have changed.

43 percent of the population was overweight or obese. According to the research, men are significantly more overweight than women; when it comes to obesity, the ratio is balanced. (jaw/sda)
