It’s hard to imagine a wardrobe without a shirt. Yes, it’s hard – it’s impossible! The first thing a stylist will advise you if you are putting together a basic capsule is to just buy a good plain shirt, most often white of course. And that, by the way, is not an easy task! Yes, there are a huge number of seemingly suitable models in stores, but most of them categorically do not suit us. Because in addition to design and color, they have at least five details that can cheapen the picture and spoil the whole picture.
Remember how mom always felt your shoulders when she picked out a jacket for you to grow up? So there should be no “dropping” or “flying”, the shoulders are either in place or they are not. Oversize, of course, means additional volume: if the sleeve line is slightly lowered, we allow this option. But if the sleeve, on the other hand, starts above the shoulder, it cuts off the arm – it looks short!
We never tire of talking about the importance of good content. High-quality fabric is already half of the “expensive” and decent look. We put away the shirts that are still in the store: they are too translucent, they lose threads, they wrinkle a lot, they crumble, they look gray (if you are looking for a white model). It won’t last long!
The main problem that spoils pictures with shirts is their irrelevant fit. Fitted silhouettes, which stylists are so much against, are not a wild anti-trend: on the contrary, many designers deliberately “thin” the shirt at the waist to emphasize the figure. But this trick works in conjunction with voluminous sleeves and sufficient length of the product, if these elements are not present, we do not buy the shirt.
Separately, take a closer look at the collar: if it has lost its appearance and “laid down” (everyone is tired, we understand) without leaving the store, this is a reason to postpone a dubious find. You may not like the stand-up collar and put it over your shoulders like a sweater, but if this element of the shirt is not padded, it will in any case look “cheap” and unkempt.
Decor is not our enemy either, but it pays to choose it very, very carefully. If you are deliberately looking for a shirt with an interesting accent, then collar straps or embroidery can be interesting solutions. But in basic models, such details should be kept to a minimum and ideally excluded. Yes, sometimes even a logo can spoil the impression of the most harmonious look – so what’s the risk?
