How to wear shorts if you are over 50: tips from stylists Fashion

“Stereotypes lead us to believe that the older we get, the more we have to cover up. In some cases, this rule works, but not when it comes to shorts. They look chic at any age and are indispensable in the summer – you shouldn’t refuse them,” says stylist Elisabeth Kosich.

And to feel comfortable and confident in shorts, take note of these expert recommendations.

Think high waisted

“This cut visually lengthens the waist and makes it thinner. I love wide, high-waisted shorts – they’re versatile and give your silhouette the shape you want,” says stylist and fashion blogger Tara West. And Kosich adds: “The high waist is flattering – it divides the body into thirds, and that’s the ideal proportion of the outfit. Additionally, it highlights the curves if they are present and adds them if they are not.

Consider the length

It is as important as the waistline. Stylist Bridget West says she recommends mid-length pants for her clients over 50. “Shorts just above the knee look light and casual with a light linen shirt, with a sweater and with a cardigan and silk top,” she says.

Emphasize your legs

Kosich is sure that women over fifty should not be afraid to show their legs. “If you choose the right shorts, your legs will appear longer and you will look taller. Try shorts with vertical stripes or sharp lashes to elongate the silhouette,” she advises. To complement such a bottom, he recommends sandals to match the color of the skin – they will act as another “extension” of the legs.

Switch to monochrome

“Think monochrome – it’s minimalistic, modern and elegant. Complement a classic linen shirt with, for example, denim shorts, leather sandals and a statement necklace,” advises Kosich.

Sew custom shorts

Ah, those stylists – their advice is never complete without an offer to go to the seamstress! For example, West believes that tailored shorts are the best way to create a stylish and sophisticated look as well as emphasize your individuality. “You can accessorize with bold buttons, lapels, slanted pockets or wide belt loops to suit your taste, or choose elegant fabrics such as jacquard, textured tweed or linen,” says the stylist.

Don’t forget that shorts aren’t just casual wear.

Of course, we most often wear them during the day and often only with a T-shirt. But according to Elizabeth, considered a ‘playful’ outfit, shorts can easily be ‘taken to new heights’ by pairing them with a white ‘crispy’ shirt, a blazer with elbow-length sleeves and accessories – a look that’s also great for a formal event.
