Linen is popular and no wonder – it’s highly breathable, wicks away moisture and holds color better than many other materials. This fabric is not cheap, so you should not spoil the elegant look with mistakes: these are the ones that stylists recommend to avoid.
The temptation is very great – everyone knows how easy laundry is to wrinkle. We can say that the immediately appearing folds are its “trick” and characteristic feature, and there is nothing surprising in the fact that sooner or later every owner of linen things thinks: “Why iron them at all?”
Fashion expert Shantel Hartman Malarki advises not to listen to such advice from your inner voice: according to her, if you do not iron or steam clothes, then folds everywhere, not just at the folds, will change your image from chic to disheveled.
“Linen things look peaceful. But if you offset this effect without paying attention to the fit, then sloppy can become sloppy,” says underwear designer Rael Cohen. She also advises finding a balance between loose and tight clothing: for example, if you decide to wear wide-leg linen pants, it’s better to combine them with a fitted top than with an oversized shirt.
According to stylist Bridget Stasen, the linen is too light and airy to wear with clogs, heavy boots or high platform shoes. “It’s better to complement it with sandals, low heels or ballet flats,” says Bridget.
In the cold season, he advises to transfer the rule of massive shoes to fabrics and not to wear clothes with heavy materials. “What you wear with your underwear should be the same weight or lighter,” says Stansen. According to her, a combination of cotton or cashmere would be good, but bulky jackets or sweaters should be avoided.
Linen is a simple fabric, so it’s important to add personality to your look with accessories. It could be a bold necklace, earrings or a scarf,” says Cohen. And Stasen advises adding a thin belt to a linen dress – according to her, it will become an excellent visual accent that will not burden the outfit.
