Fashion expert and author of the recently published book The King’s Wardrobe: A Highly Fashionable History of the Monarchy Rosie Hart believes that ‘Welsh blue’ has become a signature color associated with Kate and William. This color distinguishes their family within the royal dynasty as a separate unit and emphasizes their unity and shared values.
“Blue is a nicer alternative to the colors traditionally associated with royalty, much less aggressive than red and much more conservative than purple. It is connected to both the world and modernity, so it perfectly reflects Kate and William’s desire to appeal to both traditional and progressive values of society,” says Hart.
At the same time, it’s worth noting that Kate has done a painstaking job of turning blue into “her” shade over the years. Starting with the Issa gown she posed in on the day of the engagement announcement and her sapphire engagement ring, Katherine has carefully cultivated the bond between herself and the color blue.
In her first official portrait in 2013, Kate was shown wearing an inky blue blouse. In the 10th anniversary photos, she wore a blue floral dress and William wore a blue jumper, while at the Easter service in Windsor 2022, William, Katherine, George and Charlotte wore different shades of blue.
Kate and William are not the first representatives of the royal family to appreciate the noble blue color above all. It was a favorite color of Queen Alexandra, often featured in Queen Mary’s wardrobe, and was undoubtedly a personal favorite of the Queen Mother.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon liked to dress herself and her two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, in pale blue, especially when they went to public events. The bright, heavenly hue contrasted beautifully with the typically muted color palette of everyday wear at the time. The family’s governess, Marion Crawford, noted that it had become such an integral part of their personalities that she herself was forced to abandon clothing of this color so as not to “blend in” with the monarchs.
But rebellious Megan and Harry chose shades of green as their flagship. For her final appearance in the Commonwealth as a working royal, Meghan opted for a bright green cape dress by Emilia Wickstead, which Prince Harry kicked off by wearing a suit trimmed in the same shade. In 2021, the couple posed for a photo shoot for TIME magazine in monochrome outfits in various shades of green.
According to the fashion expert, the couple emphasizes their interests in environmental issues.
