So disgusting!: The new board game by Frantic inventors needs to be brutal

A game night can end in two ways: either everyone is happy and has fun playing the game. Or the situation escalates: the game board is swept off the table, others are accused of cheating, and if someone carefully reads the instructions, the night is really over. It should be said: There are quarterbacks who deliberately want to bring out the bad and the bad in us.

The founders of Rulefactory and the publishers of the Frantic card game had exactly this in mind: they developed a crazy maze-like game with the Library of Jakkarth board game, which is “twice the average” according to founding member Pierre Lippuner (31).

In the game, players must collect five keys of the same color. They need to keep getting new cards and placing them on the board so that the board expands in different directions. Common: The longer the game is played, the sooner the game will turn against the players. How does it work? Quite simply, Lippuner assures: “The rooms are added in a sequential order, so that towards the end obstacles appear in areas that players must overcome.” These are defeated by received special cards.

However, the new game doesn’t come entirely from Rulefactory’s inventor’s workshop. The idea came to the minds of two students from the University of the Arts Zurich: Nils Lange (27) and Endre Banlaki (27), who studied game design with Lippuner. In the board game module, two friends designed the first version of the Library of Jakkarth. Since Pierre Lippuner and the Rulefactory team had great success with Frantic, Nils Lange and Endre Banlaki went to them with their game. “When Nils and Endre showed me the game, I was immediately excited about it,” Lippuner says. His teammates were also enthusiastic and soon the team consisting of Fabian Engeler (31), Pascal Frick (31), Stefan Weisskopf (30) sat down and started developing the game.

The four game makers are crowdfunding on Kickstarter, aiming to raise the necessary funds by June 16 to launch the game in March 2024. Labyrinth of Jakkarth is Rulefactory’s most complex game to date: After the success of Frantic, they’ve released three more card games.

From exit to game workshop

The quartet met on debut in 2010. Frick, Engeler and Weisskopf grew up together and met Lippuner through a mutual friend. “We were talking to each other in front of a bar and somehow we found a deck of cards that the three of them designed together,” Lippuner remembers. Since Pierre Lippuner was a graphic artist, he offered to design the cards. One thing led to another, and now half a million people are playing their game.

But why the game should be so brutal Lippuner laughs off: “We love games where you can compete against each other, and that’s our motto: find new enemies in a fun way.”
