Than “The Super Mario Bros movie“With the global revenue of $1.288 billion, Disney’s”The Ice Queen“to overtake. This makes the video game adaptation the second or third highest grossing animated film of all time – depending on whether you classify the 2019 remake of “The Lion King” as an animated film. Next to these with $1.663 billion, only “Frozen 2” with revenue of $1.454 billion is ahead – and both are probably too far away to reach that.
Nevertheless, there are still some milestones for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to reach. In the overall ranking of the most successful films of all time, 19th place has already risen. A few movies before that are still within reach – most notably “Jurassic World 2” (rank 18; $1.310 billion), “Star Wars 8” (17; $1.334 billion), “Harry Potter 7.2” (rank 16; $1.342 billion) and “Black Panther” (15; $1.350 billion).
Soon to be the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the US box office?
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in particular could set a record and to secure the title of the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the US box office. Here are not the two “Frozen” movies before Plumber Mario’s adventure, but currently only “The Incredibles 2”.
There are only about 40 million dollars separating “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” from this title. The question of where to sort 2019’s “The Lion King” is also irrelevant here. Because it was already overtaken in the US box office.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in Germany
Even in Germany, where cinema attendance is traditionally measured not by sales but by number of visitors, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ a huge hit. With approximately 4.9 million movie tickets sold, no movie will come close to such a success in 2023 (“John Wick 4” comes in 2nd with 1.7 million). Animation records are certainly not broken in Germany with this measurement method, as Disney hits ran for centuries and cinema behavior was different.
With 27.3 million tickets sold, ‘The Jungle Book’ is way ahead of the list, ‘The Lion King’ (here the 1994 animated film) with 11.9 million. Even one of the biggest animation hits of this millennium will not be “The Super Mario Bros. Film” in terms of visitors* in Germany. Among other things, “Finding Nemo” with 8.8 million or “Ice Age 2” and “Ice Age 3” with 8.7 million each are far ahead. However, in the past ten years, only “Minions” with 6.9 million and “Frozen 2” with 6.8 million movie tickets sold were more successful than “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
