Most smokers probably plan to give up this annoying habit sooner or later. Every kid knows it’s not that easy. Nicotine addiction – or smoking addiction is a common addiction in this country. Almost two million Swiss are regular smokers.
Adverse health effects are well known. This is primarily due to the nicotine, but also to the other substances in the cigarette. The consequences are varied and range from hardening of the arteries to heart attack and erectile dysfunction. How dangerous the habit is is reflected in the number of deaths attributable to smoking: around 9,000 people die each year in Switzerland as a result of tobacco consumption. So it’s time to quit smoking! The consequences of quitting smoking are not only good for your health, but can be felt very quickly.
After a little less than 20 minutes, it is admittedly still very temporary smoking cessation noticeable. His heart rate and body temperature returned to the same level as if the cigarette never existed. After two hours, the blood circulation in the body gradually improves. Heavy smokers may already suffer from withdrawal symptoms here. After eight to 12 hours, the oxygen levels in the blood improve significantly and move back to normal.
After 24 hours, the first day will be completed. The risk of heart attack has already dropped drastically and blood carbon monoxide levels are approaching zero. There is much less tar and mucus in the lungs than the day before.
Two days later, the last bit of nicotine is gone. However, this also means that withdrawal symptoms, and therefore cravings, are particularly strong at this point. Then the nerve endings regrow over the next few days, so that the ability to smell and taste becomes significantly better again.
After just two to three weeks, all physical activities are significantly easier. Various regenerative processes are currently taking place in the body. For example, circulation and lung function have already improved significantly. And most people should have overcome their withdrawal symptoms by this time.
After only a month, the lungs begin to regenerate. The risk of getting an infection is already reduced. Dry cough and shortness of breath should also have decreased significantly by this time.
By the end of the first year, the risk of having a heart attack had already been halved.
5 years of smoking cessation – the body will thank you. Many substances in cigarettes adversely affect blood vessels and therefore can trigger strokes. But after five years, the risk was halved, as was the risk of developing cancer of the mouth, esophagus, or bladder.
Cancer is often one of the dangers smokers are exposed to. The most dangerous of its varieties is undoubtedly lung cancer. Smoking is responsible for nine out of every 10 deaths from lung cancer. 10 years after quitting smoking, the risk of developing lung cancer decreases by 50 percent. The risk of having a stroke is now even that of a non-smoker.
And anyone who has managed to abstain from smoking for 15 years has the same risk of developing heart disease as a non-smoker.
