“Ted Lasso” is not only one of the best series that is currently (still) flickering on the home screens for us. Hardly any current series combines heart and cleverness as skilfully as the Apple production, which despite its premise (American football coach whips an English football team into shape) can also inspire viewers who have absolutely nothing to do with football. (as the author of these lines can also confirm first hand).
But now it seems that the peak is really coming to an end. Leading up to “Ted Lasso”‘s third season, there were a lot of reports that it would be its last – and it wasn’t a coincidence. Series co-creator Bill Lawrence, as well as co-writers Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein, have both stated that Season 3 will wrap up the story so far and be the end of the story they wanted to tell.
However, Apple itself was (and is) reluctant to announce the third season of “Ted Lasso” as the finale, which is why some still clung to the hope that it could still go ahead. However, on the eve of the twelfth and final episode of season 3, there are now more indications that it will really be over after that…
The last match
Not only is the title of the episode “So Long, Farewell” (in German: “Bis then, take care!”), Ted Lasso himself (the official “Ted Lasso” Twitter account tweets from the point of view of the fictional title character) now promised a “final game”. – but of course not without garnishing the sad news with an ironic lasso-like comparison.
“A few years ago I got on a plane with Coach Board to a small town in London,” the tweet reads. “Tonight we play our last game. It’s like in the David Lynch movies. I can’t tell you what’s going on, but I definitely don’t want it to end.”
Spin-off(s) instead of season 4?
It is perhaps conceivable that this simply means the last game of the football season within the series plot. The arc at the beginning of the series actually makes it sound more like a general goodbye, which has now become even more likely. But even if “Ted Lasso” does come to an end with season 3, it doesn’t have to be a final goodbye.
Jason Sudeikis has already hinted in the past that we could still get one or the other spin-off after the series ends, There would be plenty of opportunities for that with the large ensemble of figures. And with the popularity and success of the 11-time Emmy-winning series, Apple is eager to keep the brand alive (which may also explain the reluctance to call season three the last).
Anyway, “Ted Lasso” should end with the twelfth and final episode of the third season, which will be released on Apple TV+ tomorrow, May 31, 2023. There won’t be a fourth season anyway. It remains to be seen whether it will continue in a different form.
