Thomas Danneberg mentioned John Travolta, Dennis Quaid, Nick Nolte, Rutger Hauer, John Cleese, Terrence Hill and many, many more – but above all Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since Danneberg took his well-deserved retirement, the question of the successor of these two has been occupying German film fans.
Especially with Stallone it is still open. When “Das Boot” legend Jürgen Prochnow was hired for his iconic roles as Rocky (in “Creed II”) and Rambo (in “Rambo: Last Blood”) as well as “Samaritan”, Bernd Egger suddenly found himself in “Guardians Of The Milky Way Vol. 3”. With Arnold Schwarzenegger there have been fewer discussions lately due to lack of appearances, but now it seems clear: Unlike Stallone, Egger isn’t just an alternate here, but probably the regular new regular cast – so now in “FUBARheard on Netflix!
Courtesy of Netflix: That’s probably why Bernd Egger is probably the regular voice for Arnie
Egger is not an entirely new voice for Arnold Schwarzenegger. He already credited the actor in “Terminator: Dark Fate” and also voiced the cult killer robot for a video game. Egger could also be heard on his almost namesake in the few other roles Schwarzenegger played in “Killing Gunther”, “Iron Mask” or a cameo appearance in “Young Rock”. The Berlin dubbing company FFS Film- & Fernsehen-Synchron GmbH was also responsible for “FUBAR” after the implementation of “Terminator: Dark Fate”. So it was obvious to stick with Egger.
But “FUBAR” is still a crucial milestone in our opinion. Because the Netflix series will be seen by a lot of people. With eight episodes of 45 to 59 minutes each and Schwarzenegger in a leading role, there is plenty of time to get used to the voice. Whoever is heard as Schwarzenegger here will now be Schwarzenegger in the minds of many people. A future realignment would be much more difficult and risky – and therefore much less likely.
Bernd Egger: Close to Danneberg, but damn young
Incidentally, this successor is not entirely undisputed among fans. On the one hand, Egger has the great advantage of getting very, very close to Schwarzenegger’s previous spokesperson, Danneberg. So the change is not that big.
On the other hand, the voice actor was born in 1984. Schwarzenegger is almost twice as old as his German voice. Some complain that this can be heard because the speaker has to press hard to sound old enough. Others, on the other hand, believe that he succeeds very well in sounding older (because he already does) and is therefore a perfect successor to Danneberg on Schwarzenegger.
On Netflix you can already get an idea of it yourself, although we actually recommend the original “FUBAR” if there is one at all, because the protagonist’s Austrian heritage was also carried over to his character. In the original English version he occasionally uses a German swear word. But we can’t really recommend “FUBAR”:
