For a long time, it was pretty quiet around “The Wheel of Time”: the last episode of the fantasy series on Amazon Prime Video was released on December 24, 2021. Since then, the series has been heard occasionally (around July 2022, a third season ordered) and even a short teaser has appeared. Still, for a while you might feel that Amazon had forgotten about its second biggest fantasy hit (behind the mammoth project The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). But puff pastry cake!
As Amazon has now revealed, “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 will be available on Prime Video from September 1, 2023. The new season will again have eight episodes. The frequency with which these will appear has not yet been determined. There are also some photos from Season 2 with the new and old main characters:
In addition to Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, who has been known since the first season, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Madeleine Madden as Egwene, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve and Marcus Rutherford as Perrin as well as Hammed Animashaun as Loial and Fares Fares as the Dark King, there’s also a cast change we reported on earlier: Dónal Finn now plays Mat Cauthon instead of Barney Harris.
New in Season 2 include: Ceara Coveney as Elayne Trakand too Ayoola smart as Aviendha, who belongs to the warrior women of the Aiel people. In perhaps the best scene from season 1 of The Wheel of Time, one of the Aiel was already seen in flashback: the heavily pregnant mother of main character Rand fighting with some warriors as she is repeatedly brought to her knees during childbirth . And also Aviendha throws one of the short spears that the Aiel are famous for in the first picture:
We also see two members of the Seanchan in the first photos. The people of this fabled realm long ago retreated from the continent on which the main plot of the series (and book) is set. However, the last scene of Season 1 already indicated that the Seanchan have now returned…
The Wheel of Time Season 2 is an adaptation of the second book in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series titled The Great Hunt. The title references the quest for the Horn of Valere, which villain Padan Fain (Johann Myers) stole from Fal Dara in the season 1 finale and which countless characters and factions are now trying to get their hands on.
Still, showrunner Rafe Judkins has repeatedly indicated that fans of the original book shouldn’t expect an adaptation that follows Robert Jordan’s lyrics to the letter. Instead, the series (as in season 1) will partly go its own way and mainly take over elements from later books…
