Or maybe you haven’t even watched The Mother on Netflix yet. And then, despite the hype about the campaigner with Jennifer Lopez, we can still advise you: Forget him and check out the better one woman army hits – there are so many more to discover!
The Mother seems to be resonating pretty well with audiences right now, or at least interestingly enough – J.Lo’s starring role is a strong selling point, after all – to get Netflix subscribers streaming. With 83.7 million hours of viewing in its first five days, “The Mother” has had the best start to a Netflix movie in 2023 to date.
A hit with audiences and bad reviews
But the international critics are not really convinced: Bei “The Mother” averages a weak 45 out of 100 points and on only 44 percent of the reviews are positive – meaning the campaigner is classified as “rotten”, i.e. “lazy”. And FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian also casts a harsh judgment on “The Mother,” calling it “crappy.”
The good: Of course we have a few tips ready for you, which are thematically similar to “The Mother” about a woman who cleans everything and everyone and in whom you better invest your time! And if you liked “The Mother,” because after all its streaming success somehow speaks for itself: so much the better, then our recommendations should really appeal to you.
These women-led activists are worth watching
“Shockon Netflix: Kate Beckinsale plays a bouncer with anger issues who dons an electrode-padded jacket on herself so she can shock herself when she has a temper tantrum. But that doesn’t stop her from launching a vendetta when her new boyfriend is murdered. “Kateon Netflix: For assassin Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), no job is too dangerous, no mission unsolvable. When she is poisoned while on assignment in Tokyo and is soon to die, she has absolutely nothing to lose and really throws things on track. FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian definitely had a fun and uncomplicated time with the crazy, brutal action fireworks, even if it was little more than “Style over substance” – you can read more about that in this article.
“Atomic blond“ as VOD: Unfortunately not currently available on a streaming subscription, but it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled as that could change at any time. Charlize Theron rocked the cinema screens in 2017 with “Atomic Blonde” and the fact that her brilliantly choreographed fight scenes were rock solid should have been due in no small part to “John Wick” creator David Leitch in the director’s chair.

“The meanness“ as VOD: Even the series “John Wick” is inspired by this gory FSK-18 revenge thriller and is therefore something for fans of the harder pace. Sook-Hee (Ok-bin Kim) learned to torture and kill at a young age. She later puts her skills to work as an assassin for a government organization. Of course, if she wants to retire, it’s not that easy…
Our verdict: “The action sequences, which are as exaggerated as they are imaginative, should make the hearts of all fans of Asian genre cinema beat faster.” Click here for our 3.5 star review of “The Villainess”.
“Louon Netflix: And finally, another Netflix tip starring Oscar winner Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”). She plays a mysterious badass lone wolf who gives up her reclusive life to help a neighbor find her daughter. While this film is much slower and less action-packed than our previous tips, “thanks to Janney and a successful staging of the gloomy, rainy forest setting by Anna Foerster, it’s worth it for genre fans, so we recommend it,” says FILMSTARTS – Editor Björn Becher – you can read more about this in this article.
