In 2014, Warner revived the nuclear giant lizard with “Godzilla” – which also marked the start of his own MonsterVerse, in which legendary Japanese and American movie monsters would meet once again on the big screen. “Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters” finally keeps this promise, as here Kaijū fans get their money’s worth and can marvel at several giants fighting for dominance on the planet. The hilarious brawl of the gigantic giant creatures airs tonight, May 19, 2023 at 8:15 PM on Pro7.
“King Of The Monsters” is an epic CGI spectacle that scores with impressive action sequences and puts the monsters in the foreground much more clearly than its predecessor. When genre veterans like Rodan, Mothra Godzilla and the three-headed super-beast meet Ghidorah, the hearts of Kaijū fans leap with excitement. And even the brief appearances of the smaller, newly introduced titans like Methuselah or the mighty Behemoth are a lot of fun.
People are the biggest weak point
As with the “Godzilla” predecessor, the human characters take up more space than they actually need and unfortunately slow down the otherwise moody monster dash over and over again. But hey, somehow, when you watch a Godzilla movie, you’re buying some sort of pseudo-scientific (or even esoteric at worst) banter designed to explain its sudden rise of the nightmarish giant creatures – that’s always been the case with the Japanese originals.
Nevertheless, unlike “Godzilla”, the human part of the action is almost limited – mainly because the characters in this part deal much more directly with Godzilla and his companions. Moreover, the story even fairly depicts the symbiotic relationship that the human and the giant lizard have. In the end, it doesn’t matter anyway, because the final battle, which pits Godzilla against the terrifying King Ghidorah in a devastated Boston, makes up for all the previous lengths!
This is what Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters is all about
Five years have passed since Godzilla first appeared. In the battle with the titan Muto, the monster razed entire cities to the ground. To prevent another such incident, the scientific organization Monarch, which has so far independently handled all incidents related to the newly appeared giant monsters, must be placed under state control. Alternatively, all Titans would otherwise have to be killed to avoid further fatalities and billions in damage.
However, Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) sees the creatures as more than a threat to humanity. The scientist has built a machine that allows her to not only communicate with them, but also monitor their actions. But when the device falls into the hands of eco-terrorist Jonah Alan (Charles Dance), he sets out to bring civilization to the brink of collapse and uses its power to awaken slumbering titans around the world. And now the world faces an unprecedented problem…
