In these cantons, companies are most often divided.

According to police crime statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, approximately 36,000 thefts were reported to the police in 2022; that’s 14.6 percent or more than 4,000 crimes over the previous year. It’s also the first increase in thefts from sneaking into homes and apartments since 2012. The connection between the increase in house and apartment thefts and the end of corona measures is obvious. Because even if more people now work from home office, they are usually still on the road more often.

The riskiest summer nights for businesses

While thieves enter more detached houses and apartments during the day, the situation in companies is the opposite. Here, thefts mostly occur at night or on the weekend, when there is a high probability that no one will be found. But as assessments by insurance company Axa show, not only the time of day but also the season plays a role. About one-fifth more company thefts are recorded in summer and fall than in winter and spring, possibly related to the holiday season.

More active thieves in French-speaking Switzerland

Entrepreneurs sleep a little more peacefully in German-speaking Switzerland than in French-speaking Switzerland because over the past 15 years, the cantons of Geneva and Vaud in western Switzerland have recorded the most thefts per insured company, followed by Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Jura and Basel-City.

On the other hand, it was the safest of the two half-cantons of Appenzell, followed by Uri, Schwyz and Obwalden. As the Axa statistics show, the probability of theft in Geneva was four times higher than in Appenzell. According to federal crime statistics, scammers most often target the construction and vehicle trade, as well as sales, businesses and businesses.

Overall, in a cantonal comparison in 2022, the most thefts were recorded in Basel-Stadt with around 7.7 per 1000 inhabitants. It is followed by the canton of Geneva with 6.5 thefts per 1,000 people.

Alarm systems can prevent theft

Unfortunately, given the clearance rate of just over 20 percent, victims are unlikely to get their stolen goods back. It is therefore worth investing in building security, such as alarm systems, as an important component of burglar protection.

Everything from a wireless alarm system for the home to a comprehensive alarm system for companies is available. A security analysis by experts helps identify gaps in theft protection and protect businesses from property damage, loss of earnings, display damage and replacement costs.

Overall, the increasing number of thefts seems to be bothering people in Switzerland. In the first quarter of 2023, online retailer Digitec Galaxus recorded a massive 35 percent increase in sales in the “Home Security” segment. In fact, alarm systems were ordered 37 percent more often.
